Opt out of access-code charges.Don’t pay for what you can get cheaper or free.

Many colleges add a charge for books and access codes to your bill automatically. Federal rules say you can opt out. But you're charged unless you act, and the deadline comes fast.

Your rights, plainly

Since 2016, federal rules have let colleges charge course materials straight to your student account only if the price is below market, you can get the materials by the first week of the term, and you can opt out. In December 2024 the Department of Education stopped its effort to change that rule, so it still stands today.

Your school may call it inclusive access, equitable access, first-day access, or a course materials fee.

Five steps, early in the term

  1. Check your bill. Open your student account and look for a line like “course materials,” “digital materials,” “inclusive access” or “day one access.” Note the amount and which classes it’s for.
  2. Find the opt-out deadline. It’s usually in the first week or two, often by the add/drop date. Search your bookstore’s website for “opt out,” or ask the bookstore. Write the date down.
  3. Ask your professor first. Some classes put graded homework and quizzes inside the access code. Opting out could mean losing those points. Ask: “Is the access code required for graded work, or can I use another edition?” Write that email.
  4. Compare the price. Look up the same book or code on the publisher’s site, used and rental sites, and the library. If the course charge is cheaper and the code is required, staying in may be the right call.
  5. Look for the free version. The book may be a free open textbook, or on reserve at the library. Search free textbooks.
Before you opt out: if the class uses an online homework platform that comes with the access code, opting out may lock you out of it. Get your professor’s answer in writing first.

Your opt-out letter

If your school has an opt-out form or button, use it first. Send this too, so you have it in writing.

Add your student ID yourself before you send it. We never ask for it or keep it. What you type stays only in this browser.

After you send it

  1. Check your bill again in a week. The charge should be gone or credited.
  2. Still there? Reply to your own email, or go to the bookstore or bursar in person with it. Ask for the name of the person who helps you.
  3. Missed the deadline? Ask anyway, politely. Explain why, and ask whether the financial aid office can help if the charge creates a balance or a hold.
